It hits you unexpectedly,
catches you unawares,
throwing you into a clearing
in a very dense wood,
where the grass is damp
and gets between your toes.
You want to reach out and retrieve
the passion that evaporated into oblivion
somewhat puzzled by when it finally
surrendered to the unavoidable truth
that not an ounce of chemistry remains,
there is no ripple in the veins.
A sad, heavy heart accepts the situation,
knowing once its gone, it can never be
rediscovered, no matter where you look,
better that defeat is accepted, and you
are set free to love again,
should you find the courage.
Pleading, distressed eyes,
make you weep, for confusion
and disbelief are yours,
punishing you for something
that was unavoidable,
